Hyderabad: Former India captain, Victor Amalraj expressed a fervent hope that the city that was once renowned for its high-quality football would regain its lost glory in all its regality in the not too distant future.

He gave a clarion call to the budding footballers to rise to the occasion and take inspiration from the iconic footballers from the city who were the toast of Indian Olympic campaign till the 1960 edition, which capped off with a historic fourth place finish. He said Hyderabad had a major part in the Indian football folklore, which could be revived if the current crop takes to the game with all purposefulness and passion.

Amalraj was speaking after inaugurating the Association of ICSE & ISC Schools, Telangana and A P Region XXIII A P Regional Sports Meet-2014 at the sprawling campus in Nasr Boys School at Gachibowli) on Wednesday. He released a couple of doves as a symbol of peace to kick-start the event that will see 22 ICSE and 7 ISC battle it out for honours till Friday.

According to Hafeez uddin Ahmed, Principal of the school, the six-day sports festivities will have hockey competitions besides a quiz show. Mir Khutubuddin Khan, Secretary, Nasr Education Society also participated.
