Rajahmundry: Corruption could be eradicated by reducing usage of paper currency and abolition of notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination would help in eliminating poverty, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stated here on Thursday.

He recalled that the US was using two per cent of paper currency and Australia three per cent, while launching ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (Mere Khata Bhagya Vidhata), a national mission on financial inclusion, in association with the State government and State-level Bankers’ Committee of AP.

Addressing the gathering, Naidu mentioned that opening bank accounts for everyone in the country would eradicate poverty, terming the scheme as beginning of the end of poverty. Now banks would come to the doorsteps of the poor to provide benefits, like pensions.

The CM announced that old-age pension of Rs 1,000 would be credited to the bank accounts of beneficiaries from October 2. He urged bankers to make use of Aadhaar cover of 96 per cent in the state to expedite opening of accounts.
