Hyderabad: Having failed to convince the TRS government to declare Telangana Liberation Day as an official function, the Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party decided to hoist the national flag at Golconda Fort on Wednesday.

At a media conference on Tuesday TBJP president G Kishen Reddy said that the BJP wanted to make it clear to the TRS government that it would continue its fight to see that the government was forced to celebrate September 17 as an official function in future.

He said BJP had been demanding the ruling TRS government to announce that Telangana Liberation Day would be celebrated officially in the state. He said a delegation led by Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya met KCR and urged to announce September 17 as an official function. But KCR did not give any reply and hence the party had decided to hoist the flag at Golconda Fort.

Asked if the party had taken the permission from the government and the archaeology department, Kishen Reddy said that there was no need for it. “If the state government could hoist the flag on Independence day why should the BJP not do it,” he said.

BJP Legislature Party leader K Lakshman said since the Government had failed to celebrate the Liberation Day, the party would do it in all villages, towns and district headquarters of Telangana. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at a press conference said that none of the previous governments had declared it as an official function. No government had conducted any special programmes. Only at the party level the political parties had been observing the Telangana Liberation day. Even the TRS party had done that in the past and would continue the same practice this year also. Last year TRS leader Nayani Narasimha Reddy had hoisted the flag at the party office. Even at that function KCR was not present.

The TDP and the Congress parties also announced that they would be observing Telangana Liberation Day at their respective party offices. The AIMIM had been observing it as Black Day.
