Mathura: The actor-turned-politician Hema Malini created controversy with her remarks that widows from West Bengal and Bihar should not crowd Brindavan. Such statements coming from a parliamentarian did not go down well with women’s rights activists and leaders.
“It is the sovereign right of all to lead life at any place in India. She should support them instead of asking them to go back to their states,” said Child Rights Commission, member Mamatha Raghuveer.

YSR Congress spokesperson, Vasireddy Padma, too, flayed Ms Malini for her comments. “How can she bring local and non-local issues that too linking them to the hapless widows who want to spend their life in a religious place like Brindavan?”
Congress MLA D.K. Aruna said, “It is unfortunate such comments are made by a woman MP that too who hails from Tamil Nadu, acted in Hindi films and got elected from the Hindi belt Such comments are not expected from a woman MP.” Any citizen can visit any place, and stay as they like in India as per Constitution. She cannot bring in new rules and regulations that too on regional lines,' she said.
Congress MLA D.K. Aruna also did not spare Ms Hema Malini. "It is unfortunate such comments are made by a woman MP that too who hails from Tamil Nadu, acted in Hindi films and got elected from the Hindi belt. How can she say that widows only from one state reside in Brindavan when it is a sacred place coupled with age-old sentiments? Such comments are not expected from a women MP," she said.
On a visit to her parliamentary constituency Mathura, of which Vrindavan is a part, Ms Hema Malini said there are already 40,000 widows in Vrindavan and there was no room to accommodate more.
"There are 40,000 widows in Vrindavan. I think there is no more place in the city. A large population is coming from Bengal... that's not right. Why don't they stay in Bengal? There are nice temples there. The same is true for those from Bihar," she said.
The responsibility of looking after widows should be of states from where they hail, she said. Ms Malini, who won the Lok Sabha seat from Mathura in the recent elections with a big margin, said she would speak to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and others on the issue.
