Heavy rain lashes Guntur, The average rainfall recorded in Guntur district is 9 cm. The district administration is engaged in relief and rehabilitation measures in areas where streams are overflowing. It has asked tahsildars to monitor the situation.

Guntur: Heavy rain has been lashing the city and parts of the district since the midnight of Wednesday, throwing normal life out of gear and causing hardship to people living in low-lying areas and small traders, including road-side vendors. Several hill streams have been overflowing. Two women were washed away by an overflowing stream near Lam village, 10 km from here. Local people rescued one, but the other was reportedly drowned. Her identity is yet to be known.
Schools declared holiday on Thursday as several compounds got submerged by the overflowing drains. Agriculture fields were also said to be inundated by the heavy rain. The city received a respite from rains after 10 am, but the weather continued to be cloudy.

Mishap averted
The Hubli-bound passenger train driver's presence of mind averted a mishap at Nallapadu village when he noticed from a distance that the track was flooded.
He stopped the train and walked for a few yards only to find the track dangling and the area beneath it totally washed away.
He alerted the Guntur Railway officials. The Government Railway Police subsequently diverted trains through another track. The officials rushed a team and restored the track. The Kachiguda Express was among the trains diverted.
Tobacco godowns caught fire when lightning struck them at Chinakondrapadu near Prattipadu. Fire Services personnel put off the blaze, but the extent of tobacco damage is yet to be assessed. The overflowing of Kondaveti, Kuppagandi, Nakka and Prattipadu streams inundated low-lying areas between Chilakaluripet and Narasannapeta, causing severe hardship to the residents.
A bridge under construction and its approach road near Pokalapadu, in Sathebapalle mandal, were washed away in floods, paralysing traffic between Achampet and Sathenapalle.
Transport on the Guntur-Hyderabad road was also stopped after water overflowed near Medikondur.
