New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed a solid vote of confidence in the patriotism of Indian Muslims ahead of his visit to the United States. In an interview to a US-based television channel, CNN, Modi told the questioner: ”Indian Muslims will live for India and die for India. Al Qaeda is delusional to think Indian Muslims will dance to its tunes." The full interview will be released on Sunday.
The Prime Minister also shifted the battleground of terror from one religion or race versus another to a fight between humanity and inhumanity. “This is a crisis against humanity, not a crisis against one country or one race. So we have to frame this as a fight between humanity and inhumanity, nothing else,” he observed.
Political observers strongly feel that Modi who has been denied visa by successive US governments till he became Prime Minister for his alleged role in the 2002 post-Godhra anti-Muslim riots is sending this message to the Americans. He got a full throated backing from his party leader and former MP Syed Shahnawaz Hussain,
who said:”
The PM only voiced the party's opinion towards the minority community. His statements are totally fine. Indian Muslims have always lived and would die for the nation. In Kargil War too we saw that. This has been his thinking always, we are with minorities and he has just said that."
But the opposition Congress had a totally different take on the same statement. ”The patriotism of the Muslims has never been in doubt, it only the BJP leaders like Yogi Adityanath, Giriraj Singh, Amit Shah who keep making statements against the Muslims, and we hope that before making this statement the Prime Minister who is the tallest leader of his own party has checked it with these leaders. If he really wanted to convey this message to the Indian Muslims, then he could have said that same thing from the ramparts of Red Fort when he addressed the countrymen on the occasion of the Independence Day,” said former union minister Salman Khurshid.
