Srisailam MLA B Rajasekhar Reddy speaking to reporters on damaged to crops
As heavy inflows into Srisailam dam continue, the irrigation engineers released 7,000 cusecs of water into the canal from Pothireddypadu for irrigation purpose in YSR Kadapa district. The Chief Minister N Chandrbabu Naidu ordered the release of water. As the canal is capable of carrying not more than 2,000 cusecs of water, canal banks breached at several places, submerging crops in over 2,000 acres.

With the breach of canal banks, flood water entered into villages under Pamulapadu, Velugodu and Bandi Atmakur mandals. The works to modernise canal network was going on at snail’s pace for last six years. Srisailam MLA B Rajasekhar Reddy, who visited the flood-affected villages, criticised the State government and the Irrigation Department Chief Engineer for releasing such a huge amount of water at once into the canal. He discussed with the District Collector on strengthening of canal bank for length of 40 km.
