Vijayawada: Vijayawada was in the past, known as the “political capital of Andhra Pradesh” when the Communist Parties were too strong to be invincible. But deterioration set in with the Communist Parties, whether it is the CPI-M or the CPI, aligning themselves with either the Telugu Desam Party or the Congress.

Now the city, still known as Bezwada, is set to become the capital for Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation of the State. A surge in mafia activities along with the plans to develop the city into a capital is causing shudder among the people in this historical city, which witnessed many a battle in both the freedom struggle and in the post-Independence period. Communist parties battling the mafia gangs in the early days of Independence and suppressing them has become folklore of the city.

The mafia seems to be returning to the city with the help of counterfeit currency. The city is believed to have become a link in the chain for conveyance of fake currency in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States. That the police registered six cases of counterfeit currency gangs in as many months was evident of the seriousness of the mafia activities
Gangsters are bringing bundles of the counterfeit currency notes from Bangladesh through West Bangal into Vijayawada. The fake currency notes gangs have reportedly begun its activities six months ago after the State government’s announcement that the capital city would be built in the vicinity of the city.

The gangs are allegedly exploiting the weakness of small traders to make their business flourish. There are reports that the gangs have been operating in the city with the support of a big shot, who still remains unidentified. The police too do not seem to be interested in identifying the big shot.

The counterfeit merchants are reportedly offering Rs 10,000 fake currency notes in exchange for mere Rs 1000 genuine currency. The fake currency notes are matching exactly with that the genuine currency. It is very difficult to distinguish between the fake and genuine currency notes with a naked eye, it is said.

There are allegations that the police have exhibited apathy in trying to extract information from gangsters from West Bengal, when they were arrested. The counterfeit currency is allegedly being imported into the city by road, rail and air. It is a moot question whether the police would wake up from deep slumber and nip the activity in the bud.
