A 45-year-old man from Bhubaneshwar becomes the first person in Hyderabad to get an implantable cardioverter defibrillator which allows full body MRI scans
Bhibhu Kalyan Mohanty, a 45-year-old self-employed businessman from Bhubaneshwar, was leading a normal life with his wife and two kids. However, there had been a history of Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in his family – a hereditary disease where the heart muscle gets thickened and stiff, making it harder for the heart to pump blood. This ran in his family since generations and five of his family members including his dad had been a victim of HCM which caused a sudden cardiac arrest.
Bhibhu also started experiencing symptoms of sudden shortness of breath and palpitations a few days ago. This was accompanied by severe chest pain followed by a sudden blackout. He experienced this multiple times over the next few weeks and that is when he decided to consult his cousin – a young cardiologist practicing in Bhubaneshwar. He was asked to carry out the preliminary tests of ECG and Echocardiogram.
However, since he experienced the symptoms infrequently, he was asked to take up the ELR (External Loop recorder) test as well for accurate diagnosis. The tests revealed ventricular tachycardia which was the underlying cause of his palpitations and fainting events. This is when his cardiologist cousin referred him to Dr VS Ramchandra, the director of cardiology at Sri Sri Holistic Hospitals, Hyderabad. Upon an intensive diagnosis that included an MRI scan, Dr Ramchandra found that his prevailing condition of HCM was making him experience these unusual symptoms and was putting him at a high risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
The doctor advised him to get an ICD implanted to regulate his fast heartbeat immediately. Looking at Bhibhu’s age and family history, Dr Ramchandra recommended the new Evera MRI Surescan implantable cardioverter defibrillator. This device, which is the first ICD system approved for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, positioned on any region of the body, allows the patient to undergo an MRI scan of any region of his body, if required, to diagnose other morbidities in the future.
“With this technology, patients implanted with an Evera MRI defibrillator will now have access to the most powerful diagnostic tool – the MRI – in addition to having the highest standard in modern ICD treatment. An ICD that allows patients to have full-body access to MRI is a significant breakthrough for this patient population,” says Dr Ramchandra.
Evera ICD was successfully implanted and Mohanty can now live a better quality of life with no irregularities in his heart beat with this implanted device and is assured of not being denied an access to MRI scan in future.
“With this latest technology device, I am assured that the device will act like a doctor and will intelligently manage my heart rhythm and bring it back to normal in seconds if it becomes very high and I will also not be denied an access to MRI, which is one of the most powerful investigative tool these days for diagnosis,” says Bhibhu.
