KCR heaps sops on cops, Telangana government on Tuesday remembered the policemen who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

Hyderabad: Telangana government on Tuesday remembered the policemen who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao paid tributes to the martyrs on the occasion of the first Police Commemoration Day that was held after the bifurcation. The Chief Minister, praising the services of the policemen, announced a massive hike in the ex-gratia that would be given to policemen who die while on duty.
Stating that the development of any State government highly depends on the law and order situation, KCR said the role of police was important in the development of the State. Any investor would first assess the law and order situation before considering investments in the new State. Hence it was very important that the police continue to perform their duties religiously.
Taking a dig at the media, KCR said, “Media and movies always portray police in bad light and this outlook needs to be changed.”
The Chief Minister further added there were many occasions when he felt bad about the manner in which policemen had lost their lives while on duty and hence the government has decided that such martyrs should get their share of due respect and honor.
He said henceforth the families of the police who die while on duty will get a decent ex-gratia. The kin of the martyrs in the rank of constables and head constables ASI’s rank will get Rs 40 lakh, SIs will get Rs 45 lakh; inspectors, DSP and ASPs Rs 50 lakh and IPS officers Rs 1 crore.
“The family members will also be paid full salaries till retirement and housing and educational needs of their children would be taken care of. Unlike before, we will ensure that the ex-gratia is paid to the family within a week,” KCR added.
Among other benefits announced by KCR was increase in ceiling on medical reimbursement scheme up to Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7.5 lakh and free health check-ups for policemen aged over 45 years. The government will also be giving 50,000 mobile phones with Closed User Group (CUG) facility to all ranks of policemen in the State for better communication, the Chief Minister said.
He also enhanced the ‘batta’ paid to police constable from Rs 90 to Rs 250. He further said commodities sold at state police canteen would be totally exempted from VAT. KCR said, in addition, the SI level officers would soon be brought under the Gazetted officer’s grade.
Later, Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy, TS DGP Anurag Sharma and other senior officials laid floral wreaths at the martyrs’ police memorial.
