East Godavari firecracker unit blast, Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Wednesday demanded that the State government pay higher compensation to kin of the workers who died in the explosion at the firecrackers manufacturing unit here Monday.

Vakatippa (East Godavari): Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy on Wednesday demanded that the State government pay higher compensation to kin of the workers who died in the explosion at the firecrackers manufacturing unit here Monday. Talking to the media after visiting the village and consoling the family members of the victims in the blast, Jagan advised the government not to resort to gimmicks in the matters of compensation. The government should adopt a uniform policy as far as compensation to the victims in the mishaps was concerned, he said. He demanded that each family member of the victim be paid Rs 5 lakh. The ex-gratia paid to the injured in the firecracker blast incident was also inadequate. There should be some yardstick as far as compensation to victims and injured were concerned and it was the responsibility of the government to ensure that it should not vary from place to place and person to person at the whims the Chief Minister, he asserted.
He alleged that the officials at the instance of the powers that be had prevented the kin of some of the victims from meeting him by confining in the mandal office.
