Opportunities galore for food processing technology graduates
Keeping in view the need for trained manpower in the food-processing sector, JNTUK had started School of Food Technology in 2010 with a PG course on M Tech in food processing technology with a grant of Rs 75 lakh from ministry of food processing industries, New Delhi.

Over the last few years it has been developed into a full-fledged course with the entire required infrastructure.
JNTUK is the first university in AP to offer M Tech in food processing technology. It is also one of the few courses in India with engineering-orientation and may be the first with a complete focus on process-engineering coordinated under faculty of engineering. It is specially structured to develop manpower with engineering skills to set up and also manage any food industry. A food technology lab, food processing pilot plant, packaging lab, microbiology lab, culinary and sensor lab were constructed with the grant of ministry of food processing industries.
Apart from central library, the school has a departmental library with 95 titles and 306 volumes.
The board of studies of the department is being constituted with scientists/academicians and representatives from leading food industries. The syllabus is designed on the basis of inputs from industry. The course has been approved by AICTE and the intake is 25.
Central Food Technological Research Institute and Osmania University have sanctioned projects for the food technology students. One of the key features of the course is plant design. Project report on manufacture of one food product has to be prepared during the third semester. This covers all aspects of plant design and economics, based on which a new plant can be set up.
Students are taken for industrial visits regularly. Animations and videos are used to explain the concepts/principles. Manufacturing processes are shown through videos/virtual industrial tours. E-lectures, e-journals, e-books and web references for equipment and manufacturers are provided to the students.
56 students in three batches have completed the course. 23 students of the fourth batch are currently doing their project work. Most of them are employed.
The department also conducts awareness programmes to the students on food, nutrition, processing and cottage industry on quality and other important aspects.
