Congress to fight TRS ‘Akarsh’ in High Court
The Congress seems to be in no mood to relent in its fight against the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) over the latter\'s \'Operation Akarsh\' targeting its MLAs and MLCs.
Hyderabad: The Congress seems to be in no mood to relent in its fight against the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) over the latter's 'Operation Akarsh' targeting its MLAs and MLCs.
After the first-ever Telangana Pradesh Congress Party (TPCC) Coordination Committee meeting held at the Imperial Gardens in Secunderabad on Sunday under the chairmanship of AICC general secretary in-charge of AP and Telangana affairs Digvijay Singh, the party has decided to fight Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's open encouragement to defections before the courts. This can be seen as a change of course, as the State party leadership had earlier made public its intention to file a complaint before Governor ESL Narasimhan. Speaking to media persons after the Coordination Committee meeting, Digvijay said, “We will challenge the ruling party's open inducement to our MLAs and MLCs in the High Court. We have no intention to complain to the Governor on this issue.”
Further, it was also decided at meeting to take an aggressive posture against poaching of its people's representatives. According to party sources, Congress members will most likely stall both the Houses of State legislature on Monday.
It may be recalled that last week, the Congress members refused to allow the Assembly to transact any business for three days in a row during the ongoing Budget session.
The meeting has also decided to seek an amendment to the anti-defection law that was actually brought in by Congress during the Rajiv Gandhi era. Digvijay Singh said, “Presiding officers of the Legislative Houses will be most usually the nominees of ruling party. As such, it is necessary to put a time limit within which the presiding officer before whom the applications for disqualification are pending, has to act within a fixed time period.”
According to him, a Chief Minister cannot encourage defections, as he takes oath as per Constitutional norms and swears that he will protect the Constitutional provisions from being violated. “When the Chief Minister himself indulges in such illegal inducement of defections, there shall be a legal remedy in place,” he said.
