Hyderabad: BJP MLAs on Wednesday caused a flutter in the Telangana Assembly by staging a sit-in before the Speaker's podium in the house protesting for not giving opportunity to the party to express views on the welfare of Telangana martyrs.

As soon as the reply on the martyrs issue was given, the Chair wound up the Question Hour. BJP senior leader and MLA G Kishan Reddy was given mike to speak in the Zero Hour. He questioned the Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary for denying opportunity to his party members to join the debate on such an important issue. He charged the Chair with running the House at the behest of the government and neglecting Opposition.

In a quick response, the Speaker tendered an apology to the BJP and assured that the party would be given sufficient time to discuss on the issue next time. Unrelenting to the Chair's request, four MLAs – Kishan Reddy, NVSS Prabhakar, T Raja Singh and Ch Ramachandra Reddy - rushed to the well of the house and squatted on the floor.

They also turned a deaf ear to the Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao and Assembly Secretary Raja Sadaram's plea to go back to their seats. As there was no option, Speaker adjourned the house for tea break for 10 minutes but the members continued their stir by sitting on the floor.

After the resumption of the house, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao intervened and praised the BJP for its role in realising the dreams of Telangana people.

He assured the BJP members that a detailed debate on Telangana martyrs and their welfare would be taken up. On the request of the Chief Minister, the agitating members called off the protest and went back to their seats.

Earlier, replying to a question posed by TDP members E Dayakar Rao, S Venkata Veeraiah, DS Redya Naik and R Balakishan, Harish said all the deserved martyrs would be provided financial assistance, jobs and housing. So far, 459 beneficiaries have been identified and the district authorities have been asked to identify the missing families, if any. The government allocated Rs 100 crore towards payment of compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of martyrs.

TDP floor leader E Dayakar Rao accused the government of neglecting the families of martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the 1969 Telangana movement. He demanded to provide pension to the families of martyrs and also nominate them as MLCs, Rajya Sabha members and to other posts as they deserved. He sought to know the status of the proposed world's largest martyr memorial being constructed in the city.

Congress deputy floor leader T Jeevan Reddy demanded the government to accord freedom fighter status to all martyrs and extend all benefits to them. He also demanded to withdraw cases booked against Telangana workers.
