Hyderabad: New badminton sensation Kidambi Srikanth is very delighted with his historic win over two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion Lin Dan to annex the China Open Super Series Premier title.

This also marked the first time that an Indian has won the title.

The 21-year-old Guntur native Srikanth said that there was no pressure while playing in the finals against Dan.

‘I never thought of the opponent and played my natural game. Beating Lin in his backyard adds to the feeling,’ Srikanth said.

The shuttler was speaking at a felicitation function organised by Mahendar Kapoor, Managing Director of Sunlight Sports, the exclusive distributors of Li-Ning across Asia Pacific. To make the occasion more memorable, they presented Srikanth with a cheque for $10,000.

Accepting the accolades, the youngster said, ‘Being the first Indian male to win a Super Series is a personal milestone and I hope victories like these act as a confidence booster moving forward. Victories such as these are also the result of the support I have continuously received from my family and Gopi Sir,’’ Srikant said.

He said with the success having sunk in, he was now focusing on the World Super Series in Dubai that takes off on December 16.

Meanwhile, Pullela Gopichand said he was delighted that Saina Nehwal and Srikanth had scripted a golden double for India while conquering China.

“I must admit that their winning the titles were the best birthday gifts I have received. Now the road ahead would be more challenging for Srikanth, who has to raise the quality of his game further.’

The coach said that ‘Srikanth has come a long way and has fought many hardships to emerge as a leading. These victories will boost one’s confidence levels and also inspire the younger lot.’
