TRS govt firm on 12% quota for minorities
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday reiterated that the state government would implement 12 per cent reservation for Muslims and Christians on the lines of the law enacted by the Tamil Nadu government in 2007 which grants separate reservation in education and employment to these communities belonging to the backward classes.

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Friday reiterated that the state government would implement 12 per cent reservation for Muslims and Christians on the lines of the law enacted by the Tamil Nadu government in 2007 which grants separate reservation in education and employment to these communities belonging to the backward classes.

Under the law of Tamil Nadu, the two communities will get a share of 3.5 per cent each in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions within the existing 30 per cent reservation for the BCs. Though the Constitution approves only 50 per cent reservations, the Tamil Nadu government extended it to 70 per cent with the provisions of legislature.
The Chief Minister, who was replying to the Appropriation Bill in the Legislative Council on Friday, said that a report on the socio-economic conditions of the Muslims was being prepared and the same would be tabled in the State Legislature He said a separate legislation was being prepared and after that they would approach the Centre for help so that the Bill does not face any legal hurdles.
Earlier, Congress Deputy Floor Leader in the Legislative Council, Mohd Shabbir Ali, pointed out that of Rs 1,030 crore allocated for the Minorities' Welfare, only Rs 112 crore have been released so far. He sought an assurance from the Chief Minister that remaining amount would be spent in the same financial year.
The Chief Miniser assured the House that the budget for minorities’ welfare would not lapse and the unspent amount would be carried forward in the next financial year.
