Nizambad: Telangana State Drugs Control Administration has busted a drug racket involved in smuggling Phensedyl cough syrup to Bangaladesh. It is estimated that the drug mafia has amassed Rs 100 crore illicit wealth by smuggling the syrup out of the country into Bangladesh since February last year.

  • Medical agencies in several districts smuggle out Phensedyl cough syrup to Bangladesh through an operator in Hyderabad
  • Racketeers allegedly amass Rs 100 crore illicit wealth
  • Drug Control Administration officials slap criminal cases
  • Section 18 of Drugs and Cosmetic Act invoked against dealers

Phensedyl syrup, according to officials, had been smuggled out of the State hidden under other commodities in trucks and buses and into Triupra. As Triupra shares two thirds of its border with Bangladesh, the smugglers are finding it easy to transport the drug into the country, the officials said.

“As the syrup contains codeine phosphate along with hydrochloride ephedrine and promethazine, youth are becoming addicted to it.

Taking advantage of demand for the syrup, several medical agencies in the State had bought the drug in bulk and smuggled them out of the State through an agent in Hyderabad” the officials said.

A medical agency proprietor in Hyderabad, the officials said, had played a key role in the racket. While each bottle of syrup cost Rs 90, the drug mafia sold it at the rate of Rs 200 a 100 ml bottle to smugglers. Another medical agency proprietor in Kamareddy had also played a role in the racket.

There are as many as 40 big medical agencies and another 40 small agencies in Kamareddy. The monthly turnover in these agencies exceeds to Rs 2 crore. The officials of the Drug Control Administration had allegedly failed to take action against the operators of these agencies for the reasons best known to themselves till now.

The Drugs Control Administration Assistant Director Surendranath said raids were being conducted on suspects now. Cases under Section 18 of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act were booked against some of the operators. Investigation is still going on, he said.
