Vijayawada: A gunman and his accomplice recently gained entry into an apartment at Patmata area in the city, threatened a lone woman and escaped with Rs 1 lakh worth of jewellery. Two months ago, the police arrested a man armed with a gun in one town and recovered from him a good number of bullets too.

These instances show that the gun culture is spreading in Vijayawada city as it prepared to emerge as a smart city on the banks of the river Krishna. Within a few kilometres from the city, a new capital city for Andhra Pradesh is to spring up, if everything goes as planned. Mafia is also said to have reared its head with land prices shooting through roof.

Beginning with shooting dead of three persons –father and his sons-at Pedavutupalli village in Krishna district, employing guns to settle old score have come to light. The Vijayawada city, once known as political capital of Andhra Pradesh, when the State remained united, has lost some its lustre with the media moving to Hyderabad and concentration of administration in the capital. Soon after the government announced its plans to build capital city in the vicinity of Vijayawada post bifurcation, gun culture has at once made its presence felt in the city. Mercenaries from Delhi were deployed to kill father and three sons, who hailed from Chinaparimi village in West Godavari by their rivals. The trio were accused in a murder case in Eluru. Both the accused and the families of the deceased belong to a family of astrologers and they are said to have vast resources at their command. The principal accused, who is still at large, is said to be in London, according to police.

The gun culture is now spreading to Guntur and East and West Godavari districts too. The gunning down of a rowdy-sheeter a week ago in a liquor bar in West Godavari district is shown as proof for gun culture spreading. Analysts wonder why the police have not kept the rowdy-sheeter on watch list.

There are rumours that guns are freely being smuggled into Vijayawada by trains from Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajastan and Mumbai.
