AP seeks control over 13 gates of Nagarjunasagar
The Andhra Pradesh Government on Saturday wrote a letter to Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) requesting it to take over all the dams on River Krishna or to hand over the 13 crest gates of Nagarjunasagar dam to it. Andhra Pradesh government, according to senior officials, has taken this stand following the demand of Telangana State for total control of Nagarjunasagar dam.
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Government on Saturday wrote a letter to Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) requesting it to take over all the dams on River Krishna or to hand over the 13 crest gates of Nagarjunasagar dam to it. Andhra Pradesh government, according to senior officials, has taken this stand following the demand of Telangana State for total control of Nagarjunasagar dam. The TS government had been claiming that the existing water available in Nagarjunasagar dam was its share and hence has absolute right to use for rabi season.
Opposing this stance, the AP informed the board that there is no monitoring mechanism to ascertain whether the TS had used its quantum of water in its upstream minor irrigation projects or not. Hence AP cannot accept the TS government’s claim that the quantum of water available was on account of saving by TS.
The TS government was silent over saving of water at the beginning of the water year. It wanted to save water in its minor irrigation projects and to use the same for a second crop under the Left Bank Canal. It had come up with its “saving” theory only at the end of the water year, alleged AP government.
The TS government, according to AP officials, had violated the direction of the KRMB with regard to maintaining level and release of water at Srisailam dam. The TS government, which has a say over the operation of the dam, now wants to prevail even in case of Nagarjunasagar dam and that this proposal was not acceptable to AP, a senior official of AP pointed out.
