Visakhapatnam: The HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Information Technology Minister Palle Raghunadha Reddy reviewed swine flu control measures with health officials at King George Hospital here on Thursday.

When Mr Srinivasa Rao enquired about the precautionary measures taken so far in view of a swine flu case registered in the city, availability of medicines and public awareness programs, KGH Superintendent Dr Madhusudana Babu replied they were taking all necessary steps to prevent spread of the disease and they have adequate availability of medicines and an order was given to Bangalore supplier for masks. He appraised that the District Medical and Health department sent surveillance teams to Isukathota area from where the four year-old boy was tested positive to conduct door to door survey.

‘Earlier, the IPM lab in Hyderabad was taking one day to send the medical report but due to sudden spurt in the number of suspected cases, they were taking two days resulting in delay to start the treatment.

Another 14 year-old boy was also admitted from the same area on Wednesday on suspicion and his swap was sent for test. The Swine Flu tested positive boy condition was stable and all the suspected cases are being treated category-wise A, B and C’, he told the Minister.

The Minister asked the DM&HO Dr Sarojani whether any public awareness campaign was organised through cinema slides or FM Radio or local private TV Channels. The DM&HO replied that banners and wall posters were displayed at all the Primary Health Centres besides taking up distribution of pamphlets. The Minister questioned her why she failed to take up the awareness programmes through hoardings, cinema slides, FM Radio and local TV private channels. The Minister enquired the officials about preventive medicine for the diseases in alternative medical systems like homoeopathy. Nodal Officer Dr Devi said suspected patients must see a doctor even after taking homeopaty and other types of preventive medicines. She said that ‘hand wash’ before taking food helps in the spread of hte diseases.

The Minister informed that a report was already sent to the Health Secretary for upgrading the virology lab in the KGH for taking up Swine Flu tests. Both the Ministers appealed to the public to co-operate with the district health administration in taking necessary precautionary measures to contain the disease and not to panic over the situation. Later, they visited the Swine Flu isolation ward.
