IIT Hyderabad conducted a 2-day symposium on Digital Fabrication

Hyderabad: IIT Hyderabad (IITH) in collaboration with Keio University Japan and Deakin University, Australia conducted a tw0-day national seminar on Digital Fabrication to deepen inter-disciplinary collaboration to further the technology and broaden its reach among entrepreneurs. Digital Fabrication entails digitisation of the design as well as of the process of fabrication; and paired with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, Digital Fabrication facilitates creation of new types of objects with unique geometrical and material properties which cannot be created using conventional methods.

The event was conducted under the aegis of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Prof. Jun Murai, Dean, Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University said, “The use of Digital Fabrication has spread in large manufacturing facilities over the last two decades, and interdisciplinary collaboration between academics and industry is serving to make the technology inexpensive and user-friendly, placing design and manufacturing in the hands of individuals.”

Prof. UB Desai, Director, IITH added, the foundation of IIT Hyderabad rests on furthering inventions and innovations, in partnership with industry. Prof. Guy Littlefair, Dean of Engineering, Deakin University, stated that advances in materials, electronics, modeling interfaces and material distribution have vaulted digital fabrication from a simple method for producing three-dimensional prototypes to a viable option for low-volume manufacturing of components ranging from bio-materials to titanium parts to foods to prosthetics.

Dr V K Saraswat, formerly Director General, Defence Research & Development Organisation and Chief Scientific Advisor, Minister of Defence, Government of India and currently member, NITI Ayog was the chief guest at the symposium. JICA is extending integrated support to IITH through Official Development Assistance loan for its campus development, joint research collaboration and academic exchanges to develop new methodology of technical innovation.
