Maternity hospital in dark for 3 hrs

The hospital plunged into darkness around 4 pm on Tuesday causing inconvenience to the expecting mothers, new-born babies and their relatives.
Transco fails to keep word on 24X7 supply
Hyderabad: The failure of the power utilities to honour an agreement of supplying 24x7 power for the Government Maternity Hospital at Sultan Bazar here threw the functioning of the hospital out of gear for a few hours. The hospital plunged into darkness around 4 pm on Tuesday causing inconvenience to the expecting mothers, new-born babies and their relatives.
The only saving grace was that power supply was available for Operation Theatres and Labour Rooms in the hospital. Speaking to The Hans India, hospital superintendent Dr Aruna Ramaiah said she was a signatory to the agreement that was signed in 2014 with the Transco for 24x7 power supply to the hospital. “Need for such an agreement was felt as the hospital used to suffer two to three hours of power cuts during summer months.
Even in the recent times the hospital has been facing power outages. Though the power utilities claim that the problem could have been due to technical reason, it had become a big headache for technicians to identify the glitches,” she said. Officials of the level of Divisional Engineers and Assistant Engineers had to personally supervise the repair work. They intervened only after the Minister for Commercial Taxes Talasani Srinivas Yadav directed to take up the issue with the senior officials of the power utilities, the doctor added.
Interestingly, the situation is no different in other government hospitals like Osmania and Gandhi. However, officials of the power utilities say that technical glitches cannot be ruled out, but for that the hospitals too need to be blamed. Every hospital has a standby generator and the minute power trips due to any technical fault, the generator should get switched on automatically.But the hospitals fail to maintain them properly and this leads to problems. In case of this maternity hospital too, the generator was non-functional and to restore the power the hospital had to hire a generator and this took about three hours.
