Hyderabad: Was it a goof up? Or the government is actually contemplating increasing VAT on petrol and diesel? The Commercial Taxes Department on Monday issued a GO about a big hike of VAT on petrol and diesel and with equal speed withdrew the order from its website. The notification included in GO 31 stated about amendments on petrol and diesel. While on petrol, the rate of tax was increased from the existing 35.2 per cent to 40 per cent, it was hiked to 32 per cent on diesel from the existing 27 per cent.

  • CMO clarifies no proposal to hike fuel charges

According to experts, if the decision was implemented price of petrol and diesel per litre would be increased between Rs 5 and Rs 7. However, as the department was flooded with calls from reporters about the hike, officials of Commercial Taxes Department stated that it was a mistake on the part of staff. The Government Order was only about adaptation of Andhra Pradesh Value Added Tax Rules 2005 to the state of Telangana.

It was a two-page GO but an additional page (VAT on petrol and diesel) was clubbed by mistake, they said. Within minutes the additional page of the GO was removed from the government website. Meanwhile, news about hike in VAT was flashed by news channels. Following this the Chief Minister’s Office hurriedly issued a denial clarifying that there was no proposal to hike fuel charges.

In fact, VAT on fuel was modified in January 2015 itself. The rate of tax on petrol was increased from 31 per cent to 35.2 % and on diesel from 22.25 % to 27 per cent at that time. Apart from this, there is no proposal to increase the VAT, the note stated. But political circles feel that the Government was perhaps contemplating increasing the VAT after the budget session but as it got leaked and since the Assembly was in session, it must have decided to withdraw it, averred Telangana Congress leaders.
