Vivanta by Taj at Begumpet is hosting its ninth Trip Tease, an evening with stand up comedy. This time they have Akshay BD, the winner of Vir Das’ Hamateur Night, and Biswa Kalyan Rath of the very famous YouTube channel Pretentious Movie Reviews and. The CityTAB caught up with Akshay to get a slice of his mind on the growing stand-up comedy scene in India.

“The stand-up comedy scene in India is booming and challenging as well. There is a difference in making your friends laugh and making total strangers laugh. Stand-up comedy challenges people to get a whole set of unknown people relate to what you’re saying and leave them laughing,” says Akshay.

He goes on and elaborates, “There is a demand for stand-up comedians and there are not many catering to the demand. And that is why it’s something people forward to. It is an art form that has to be developed from the scratch. To grow as a comedian one has to only look for means to get themselves familiar with the audience. YouTube is one medium that has given us a huge platform to present our works of comedy.”

Akshay is aware that stand-up comedy is not always light-hearted banter. “There exists an undefined line in between taking comedy in a funny way and taking offence. We have always been trying to find out where to draw that line. It differs from place to place. The local sensitivity in one place is different from the other. And I don’t blame the audience for taking offence. The AIB Knockout was taken down not because of its content but because of the cultural communal disputes it had started.”

The comedian works for Uber’s government relations and does stand-up comedy parallely. According to him it’s all about keeping the comedy plain and honest. He looks forward to coming to Hyderabad. “Hyderabad is a verbal crowed and they look like they can take a joke quite well,” Akshay hopes. The event will be held at the hotel in Begumpet at 8 pm on Saturday.
