Hyderabad: The Sixth Metropolitan Court on Monday awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment to a railway employee, Gunda Venkatasai, in connection with his wife, Kavitha, committing suicide by setting herself ablaze. According to sources, Venkatasai, a resident of Lalapet, was booked by Lalaguda police for abetting his wife to commit suicide in 2012, after they had a quarrel and she refused to bring money from her parents.

She then doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire. After examining the facts, the convict was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of seven years by the court. The judge rejected the defense counsel's argument that it was an accidental death. Initially, a case was registered under Sections 307 and 498 A of the IPC, but after the death of the victim the charges were changed to 304-B of IPC.
