Adilabad: Minister for Forests and Environment Jogu Ramanna said that the Telangana State government would construct three barrages on Penganga river jointly with Maharashtra government in four years to mitigate the sufferings of the ayacut farmers of the Lower Penganga region in the district. It is a long cherished dream of the farmers of Adilabad to complete the Penganga project, he said.
In this connection, Jogu Ramanna inspected the Penganga region along with the respective engineers of the two States on Tuesday to find a suitable site for construction and selected a place near Akooli village of Jainad mandal in Adilabad district. As Penganga flows through Maharashtra, the permission of the Maharashtra government is required. As a result, the Telangana government entered into a deal with the Maharashtra government to construct the three barrages and as part of the deal, one barrage was being constructed in the State of Telangana and two in Maharashtra.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Jogu Ramanna said that the government was ready to complete the project in four years and provide water to the ayacut region and would also cooperate with the Maharashtra government in completing the two barrages in that State in Rajampet and Impad regions. The engineers of the Telangana and Maharashtra States are preparing an action plan to construct two barrages in Maharashtra to provide water to nearly 7,000 acres in Adilabad district.
Similarly, with the construction of the barrage in Akooli village of Jainad mandal, 13,500 acres of land would be covered for irrigation. The construction of three barrages would result in providing irrigation water to 20,500 acres in Adilabad district bringing cheer to the farmers.
Superintending Engineer Bhagawantha Rao said that the problems of the farmers could be resolved and the cost of completing the three barrages was also not much. Besides, they need not get clearance certificates from Union Ministry of Forests and Environment, he said and added that the three barrages could be completed in four years.
