Hyderabad: The TRS government seems to have stirred the hornets’ nest by its decision to levy Motor Vehicles Tax from Wednesday (April 1) on commercial vehicles entering Telangana from Andhra Pradesh. This issue threatens to trigger a fresh controversy between the two Telugu states which are already at loggerheads on various issues like sharing of Krishna waters, power etc.

While AP Transport Minister Siddha Raghava Rao appealed to his Telangana counterpart to reconsider the decision as it would escalate prices of the essential commodities besides forcing a hike in passenger fares. He said he met the TS transport minister and urged him not to implement the GO. But Telangana Transport Minister Mahender Reddy turned down the plea.

He said he had discussed the issue with TS Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the CM had told him that there was no hurry and he would look into the matter later. At this point of time, there is no question of going back on the implementation of the GO from the said date, the minister said. The AP cabinet will be meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

There is every possibility that Naidu might seek the intervention of Governor ESL Narsimhan and try to see that the decision was put on hold. The AP government wants that a consensus should be arrived at on the issue since Hyderabad being the joint capital for 10 years a large number of people would be commuting between the two states.

On the other hand, over 3000 private service buses said to have been cancelled from all the 13 districts of the state. Kesineni Travels had already filed a PIL in the High Court opposing the GO. To see that the passengers do not suffer, the RTC has decided to ply extra buses from Vijayawada to Hyderabad.
