Khammam: The much-awaited Vijayawada-Jagadalpur highway upgradation work finally saw the light of the day on Wednesday. It’s been eleven years since the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued a gazette elevating the roadway into National Highway.

Considering the decades-old demand for a smooth motorable road that connects AP- Telangana- Chhattisgarh, the project was announced by the then BJP-led NDA government in February 2004. Interestingly, the project which languished in the cold storage for over a decade has come to life again in the present NDA government. The estimated cost of the 44-km road stretch between Rudrampur and Bhadrachalam, and 49.8 km stretch between Rudrampur and AP- Telangana border is Rs 539 crore.

The highway, which connects Vijayawada and Jagadalpur (Chhattisgarh), passing through Tiruvuru, Penuballi, Kothagudem, Paloncha and Bhadrachalam, is expected to boost the inter-state trading activity and industrial development of the region. Besides improving road connectivity between AP- Telangana- Chhattisgarh, the four-lane divide carriageway enhances safety of road users and increases the employment potential for the local labour besides paving way for the socio-economic growth of the region.

This highway is likely to give boost to tourism by providing a hassle-free connectivity to the pilgrimage town of Bhadrachalam, Parnasala and Kinnerasani wildlife sanctuary in Telangana. On the other hand, the construction works of second high-level bridge across the Godavari river between Sarapaka and Bhadrachalam with an outlay of Rs 98.45 crore have already began.

The first bridge across Godavari here was built in 1965. Being the mineral-rich district, Khammam stands out as an ideal destination for the investors to explore diverse areas such as mineral, agro-food processing and horticulture-based industries if the roadways are improved.
