Rajya Sabha Session Begins Today. The 235th Session of Rajya Sabha begins on Thursday to further take up the financial business as part of the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.

New Delhi: The 235th Session of Rajya Sabha begins on Thursday to further take up the financial business as part of the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. The Upper House will have a total of 13 sittings, according to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat. Beginning on April 23, the session is scheduled to continue till May 13.

The 234th Session of Rajya Sabha, which constituted the first part of Budget Session was adjourned on March 20 and was subsequently prorogued on the recommendation of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. Discussion on the Demands for Grants of Railways and General Budget for 2015-16 and passing of relevant Appropriation and Financial Bills, besides discussion on working of five ministries, constitutes the main agenda for the 235th Session of Rajya Sabha.

Another important task for the Modi Government in the next 18 days will be passage of the Finance Bill, 2015. The Bill, tabled on February 28, has key tax provisions, such as changes in the Income-Tax Act for more benefits and increase in the service tax rate to 14 per cent from 12.36 per cent, among others.

The Bill will not face any problem in the Rajya Sabha despite the Government being in a minority. Since it is a money Bill, the Rajya Sabha can debate, but cannot make any amendment or vote on it.
