New Delhi: At least 51 people were killed on Saturday and 237 injured in various parts of the country in a powerful earthquake, with epicentre in Nepal, which destroyed or damaged several houses and buildings. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, bordering Nepal, were the worst-hit parts of India in the quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said that Bihar accounted for the highest number of deaths--38--and 133 people were injured in the state.

"As per the latest information, 51 deaths have been confirmed so far, with 23 deaths in Bihar, eight in Uttar Pradesh and three in West Bengal," Home Secretary L C Goyal told reporters at a press conference. In order to deal with the situation in the affected states, five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have already been sent -- one to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and one each to Darbhanga, Supaul, Motihari and Gopalganj in Bihar. The team also includes medical and paramedic personnel. The teams have equipment such as live detector machines and cutters which can cut steel, concrete and wood.
