Hyderabad: Former vice-chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Marri Shashidhar Reddy on Sunday said the organisation had become dysfunctional after the BJP-led NDA came to power in the country hitting the relief and rescue operations during the national calamities.

It was very sad that the NDMA had become totally ineffective after he demitted the office, he said. There was no organizational set up in the present NDMA except three members who were appointed by the NDA government. The vice-chairman post was left vacant for the last one year, he said.

Reddy said that in the Congress-led UPA government, the NDMA was constituted with eight members having the status of Union Minister of State and the Vice-Chairman with Union Cabinet Minister rank. Now, the three members of the authority had been given secretary rank.

Had the NDMA was constituted in full capacity by this time, the authority would have taken up rescue operations on a war-footing in the quake-hit areas during the past two days. “It is unfortunate that no disaster mechanism is in force to deal with the situation in a scientific way,” he added.
