With students travelling to European countries and Britain from various parts of Telangana especially Hyderabad to pursue Masters in engineering, many are falling prey to the Islamic State. 14 people were identified and were stopped by the State intelligence agencies at the airports on their way to Syria and Iraq.


Police informed that more are suspected to have been working with the Islamic state but tracing them is difficult due to them leaving from European countries or Britain. But the death of Ateef Waseem from Mancherial in Adilabad district has triggered the alert of both the State and Central intelligence agencies who initiated the students’ verification with suspicious links going to these countries.

Ateef Waseem was killed last week while he was fighting for the IS in Syria and his mobile phone call data while he was pursuing B. Tech in Shadan Engineering College, Hyderabad is being verified. Earlier, six youngsters plan of joining the ISIS ranks were foiled by the police; the youngsters included two engineers, a former Google employee, 19-year-old woman from the city and four others were tracked down at Kolkata.

To counsel the youth who are trying to join the IS, the Intelligence Bureau has started Operation Chakrayuh and so far the counseled youngsters are under constant surveillance.
