It is time for mankind to explore the posibilities of human settlements in space, says an excited CG Karthik of DAV Public School, Safilguda.” Echoing the same sentiment Y Akshay stresses, “Eminent scientist Stephen Hawking too warns that humanity will not survive another 1,000 years.”


The 12 students selected from different schools in Hyderabad would be presenting two papers; Vyomanoah and Vyomagraha V2 at NASA driving home their point on the need for human settlements in space. N Sri Raghunandan Kumar, director and founder secretary, Planetary Society, India, who is one of the four mentors accompanying the students, says, “Unlike the usual trips to the camping site by different school students, these students will visit Steven F Udvar-Hazy Centre to understand about the retired Space Shuttle Discovery and get hands on experience by interacting with scientists.”

As part of the programme, the students will also be visiting Princeton University, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Surekha, biology teacher and mentor, St Anns Girls High School, says, “It is a golden opportunity for students and we hope they will make the most of the trip.


The Astronomy Club at our school has 60 students and among them Akhila Sai has been selected for the trip.” The trip to NASA is being organised as part of the outreach programme but the students as well as the mentors are spending their own money. The students would be leaving on May 19 and return on June 2, 2015.


The students are C G Karthik, M Aditya Rajashekar, Naimat Ali Khan, K Chaitanya Sai, Naga Srivastava, K Koushik Kumar, D Itesh, V Akhila Sai, P Shrikar, G Madhu and Kiran Khanna. A Surekha, Jayanthi Raghuram, Krishna Bakshi and Sri Raghunandan Kumar would be accompaning the students.
