Bhopal Gas Tragedy: In the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, on the night 2 December 1984 the Union Carbide Factory leaked 27 tons of the noxious gas called methyl isocyanate because the plants six safety systems were not operational and the noxious gas leaked into the city of Bhopal the capital of the state.


As a result of this gas leak about half a million people were exposed to the deadly gas and 25,000 have died to the exposure of the air. The Union Carbide was a pesticide factory started by a US company. The noxious gases drifted into the densely populated part of the Old City area. To this day, the noxiousness of the defunct plant makes news and the people affected by it are not yet compensated properly.


Obnoxious means offensive, blame worthy, objectionable, disliked, nasty, foul, revolting, obscene. Obnoxious is an adjective. It comes from the Latin word obnoxiosus. Its derivatives are obnoxiously (adverb) and obnoxiousness (noun). Originally, the sense of the word was vulnerable to harm. The opposite of obnoxious is pleasant.
