The growing shortage of officers is crippling Indian Administrative Services. According to official information presented to Parliament in March this year, the total authorized strength of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in the country is 6270. But, the total number of officers in position as on January, 1, 2014 was 4619 resulting in a shortage of 1651.

New Delhi: The growing shortage of officers is crippling Indian Administrative Services. According to official information presented to Parliament in March this year, the total authorized strength of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in the country is 6270. But, the total number of officers in position as on January, 1, 2014 was 4619 resulting in a shortage of 1651.


As more than one fourth of sanctioned strength remains vacant , the effectiveness of this premier all India services is adversely affected, says experts. In order to address the issue of shortage of IAS in regular recruitment quota, the government has increased annual intake of officers from 55 in Civil Services Examination (CSE) 1998 to 180 in CSE 2013 in respect of IAS.


The total authorized strength of IAS officers rose to 6375 as on January, 1, 2015 But, the total officers in position is 4802. The shortage has come down to 1573 which is only a marginal reduction. The total authorized strength in Andhra Pradesh is 211 while officers in position is 167 resulting in a shortage of 44.


The total authorized strength of IAS officers inTelangana is 163 while the total officers in position is 128 resulting in a shortage of 35 officers. The Indian administrative Services suffer from gender inequalities reflecting badly on India’s human development Women constitute only a fifth of IAS officers. There are 796 women IAS officers as against 4006 men.
