The Telangana State Biodiversity Board celebrated the ‘International Day for Biological Diversity’ on Friday at the Indira Priyadarshini Auditorium in Public Gardens. The United Nations had proclaimed May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity for increasing understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

The United Nations had proclaimed May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity for increasing understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.


The theme for this year is 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development'. More than 700 people participated in the programme which included representatives from Telangana Medicinal and Aromatic Board, Telangana State Forest Department, Botanical Survey of India, Zoological Survey of India, World Wildlife Fund etc.


Telangana Environment Minister Jogu Ramanna released a booklet on ‘Access and Benefit Sharing Provisions’, a poster on ‘Fish Diversity of Telangana State’ and a book on nature. The winners of digital photography contest ‘Insect Diversity of Telangana State’ were awarded respectively with Prizes and cash prize for the photography winners.


Cultural programmes were performed on biodiversity by students of Jawahar Bal Bhavan and a film on the theme was screened. 18 eminent biodiversity conservers were identified by the TSBDB were felicitated with the award of excellence for conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
