Electricity consumers in Hyderabad were in for a shock to witness a huge rise in their bills. The recent strike by the more than 22,000 contract employees was the reason for the overblown bills.

As the consumers queued up at the Electricity Revenue Offices to get the excess amount in their bills rectified, they were turned away by the ERO staff who asked them to get their bills rectified at the field level.

But as the billing exercise was started late by the contract employees who resumed duty, calculated the consumption for more days (45 instead of 30 days). As a result, more units were showed to be consumed with more days in the bill cycle.

Divisional engineers of the power utility admitted that the strike affected the bill collection and assured that the excess amount collected in the bills would be adjusted for the next month.
