Protest against move to take over OU land

Hyderabad: A day after several students of Osmania University took out a protest and attacked Swagath Grand Hotel in Habsiguda, another group of students raided a petrol pump on Tarnaka cross-roads for allegedly operating on the University land.

The demonstration in which 12 students took part ,was led by ABVP holding flags and charts decrying the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision to acquire University land. They alleged that the petrol pump was leased out on a land belonging Osmania University. They demanded the University authorities to cancel lease and take the land into its possession.

The students allegedly tried to damage the property but timely intervention of police prevented the situation from going out of control. They were arrested and taken to a police station. “Three acres of land has been leased out for 30 years, where this petrol pump is being operated,” said J Kalyan, OU leader.

Meanwhile the police, who had arrested several students for damaging Swagath Grand hotel, booked cases against nine students and sent them to judicial custody. They allegedly resorted to stone pelting and damaged the hotel’s window panes on Monday. They alleged that TRS MLA, Muttireddy Yadagiri Reddy, had encroached upon the university land and leased out the same to a hotel and other commercial establishments.
