A leaked report on the Indiramma Housing scheme from CID inquiry ordered by the TS government reveals that 25 percent of the houses said to have been completed are either old houses white washed and counted as newly constructed ones or non-existent houses.

The AP government had taken up the housing programme to provide houses for the poor in 2006 but after a good start, the project lost track. A CID enquiry was ordered by the new TS government in July 2014 and the report revealed that no budget was allotted for the housing scheme in the last three years due to which the construction of 7.75 lakh houses stopped. At present, Rs 3,000 crore more is required to complete the entire project.

Mr M. Padmanabha Reddy, the Secretary of Forum for Good Governance said that with the TS government taking up the two bedroom houses scheme where Rs 9 lakh will be spent per dwelling, the initiative although welcomed by many has limitations in terms of maintenance charges, prohibitive initial cost, etc.

Mr Reddy also said that many want the housing project to be put on hold in order to finish the Indiramma project that is spread over the entire state as the government has spent about Rs 4,000 crore and any further delay will damage the houses.
