Police in Guyana are treating the death of an Indian national as murder after his body with multiple stab wounds was found in a relative's apartment on Tuesday, a media report said on Thursday.

Amendria Singh, 32, was found dead in his sister’s flat in capital Georgetown's D’Aguiar Park in East Bank Demerara. His sister told police that Singh was mentally ill and attacked his brother-in-law with a knife and hammer but later took his own life, Stabroek News reported.

The slain man’s sister said that her brother was schizophrenic, and that he had recently threatened to kill family members and commit suicide.

The sister was feeding her son when her brother attacked her husband.

She blamed staff at the Georgetown Public Hospital for ignoring pleas to have him admitted for psychiatric treatment.

According to a media report, Amendria Singh became mentally unstable in India after sustaining an injury.
