Hyderabad: The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) is set to become the first government hospital to perform pancreas transplantation in the State and second in the country. Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Ch Madhusudan, head of the Department, said we got license for performing pancreas transplantation two months back following which we decided to go for the transplantation.

“A 22-year-old male from Atmakur near Nalgonda district who is a diabetic by birth had developed kidney failure, known as diabetic nephropathy. He has been on Hemeo Dialysis. Due to diabetes not only kidneys but eyes are also damaged,” said Dr Madhusudan. This patient had come to OGH for kidney transplantation. The doctors, who examined him, felt that only kidney transplantation will not give any relief because of uncontrolled diabetes and again he will get kidney damaged.

A team of endocrinologist, nephrologist and gastroenterologist concluded that the patient required both kidney and pancreas transplantation at the same time. “The patient’s blood group is O positive. If we get O positive brain dead donor we will take up the transplantation immediately, they said. “We have listed this in Jeevandaan. It is a real big challenge. We may do transplantation any time,” says Dr Madhusudan.

Actually kidney transplantation was included in Aarogyasri scheme and with that money only we want to perform pancreas transplantation also, the doctor said adding that some money would also be arranged from local resources. Asked about the pancreas transplantations in the world and in India, Dr Madhusudan said that pancreas transplantation is a rare thing.

In India pancreas transplantation was conducted at AIIMS fifty years back. “The pancreas transplantation is very difficult and rejection rate is very high. And also patient requires high dose of immunosuppressant drugs. Success rate is around 50 to 60 per cent,” he says. For pancreas and kidney transplantation generally it costs Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, but at OGH the doctors say they would perform the surgery for about Rs 8 lakh only.
