Changing landscape of Friendship Day celebrations

Come first Sunday of August and people indulge in joyous celebrations of Friendship Day across diverse cultures and social segments around the globe. This is the day when people acknowledge their friends’ contribution in their lives and express their love for them.

The story behind the Day began in 1935, when the US congress decided to dedicate a day in honor of friends. The retrospection of the world scenario at the time of World War I led to an understanding that there was a greater need of friendship needed to avoid increasing hostilities, mistrust and hatred among nations as well as individuals.

Many years later, people have developed innovative ways to celebrate the day. While some offer flowers and gifts, others express it through bands and bracelets, colourful cards, cakes and chains. In India not only the retail markets but also hotel industries honour the day with discounts for partying and food. People predominantly purchase gifts online, which offer them discounts.

Event managements take this as an occasion to establish their standards through organising events including games, dance, comic and artistes such as singers, dancers, actors and anchors earn enough while participating in the events and entertain people.Adults, teenagers and children from various religions and cultures come together and swing in this joyful occasion.The way we celebrate friendship might have changed. But, the emotions remain the same.
