Hyderabad/New Delhi: The Telangana government on Saturday urged the External Affairs Ministry to take steps to ensure the release of Balaram, who has been kidnapped in Libya allegedly by the Islamic State (IS) terror group.The families of Balaram, who hails from Hyderabad, and Gopikrishna, from Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district but also living in Hyderabad, are worried about their kin but also hopeful of their release since their two colleagues were freed on Friday.


Anxiety enveloped the two families of two Indians who continue to remain in the captivity of militants in Sirte in Libya as there were no fresh developments, said sources on Saturday. As per the directives of Chief Minister KCR, Telangana chief secretary Rajiv Sharma wrote to the External Affairs Ministry in this regard, a release from the CM Office said.


The CMO here and Telangana Bhavan officials in Delhi are obtaining details on the incident and are in touch with MEA, it said. The Centre is in touch with government in Libya, as per the release. Balaram, who hails from Telangana, is among the four Indians, who were kidnapped in Libya. However, two of them have been released.

Sridevi, a member of Balaram's family, received an SMS from one of those released saying that all are safe, but the relatives are anxious as there has been no further information. Kalyani, wife of Gopikrishna, said he spoke to her on Wednesday over phone and informed that he is coming home via Tunis. The couple has two children Jhanvi (10) and Eshwar (4). Balram and Sridevi, a lecturer at a private college in Hyderabad, have two sons Vijaybhaskar (19), a B Tech student at IIT Kharagpur and Madhusudhan (12).
