New Delhi: “We are not going to take ‘no’ for an answer” was the categorical assertion of the AP Government on the issue of Special Status here on Monday”. “But it will not be by way of confrontation, but by way of conciliation, that we seek it. We will talk to the Centre time and again and convince them on the need to accord us the status. In the end, it has to be given. We deserve it.Betweed it and we demand it", it the State government resolved.

Explaining the TDP Government's stand vis a vis the demand, Parakala Prabhakar, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, said Andhra Pradesh had a right to seek a level playing field and it was the duty of the Centre to lead it to the path of progress. Citing the statements of the BJP leadership before the elections and the NDA government after and pointing to the debates in Parliament, he said the Status was necessary for the overall progress of AP.

Bifurcation of AP was not undertaken with the consent of Andhra people and moreover, it was promised that the collateral damage would be taken care. “We are just asking for what has been promised for AP and its people. We will pursue the same till we achieve the goal. We started off with Rs 16,000 crore deficit budget and need every little help to overcome the same.” “We want AP to develop fast so that we could make a meaningful contribution for the development of the country,” he said.

Referring to the demand that the TDP should make this a no-holds barred issue with the Centre, Parkala said it was absurd as the BJP was after all a friendly party and the latter had assured the people of AP that it would stand by them. Hence, confrontation was not the option but convincing the Centre was the solution, he said. He said the AP Government hoped the Centre would keep its word.

On the survey conducted by the Government recently on the performance of the delivery systems in the State, he said it was being wrongly interpreted as a survey on the performance of the MLAs. The survey was conducted as part of a mid-course correction if necessary and would be a regular feature. The government was ready to discuss the methodology, sampling and programmes assessed, but would not agree to a debate on extraneous or imaginary issues.
