Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has put the onus on agriculture department to ensure farmers reap benefits from the crops. At a review meeting on agriculture with Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and senior officials in the wake of poor rainfall in the state, KCR said Telangana is a congenial place for seed production and hence nearly 500 seed companies exist here.

TRS government is striving to make Telangana as “the seed bowl of India” by involving participation of even farmers. Rao desired Jayashanker Agriculture University to focus on research studies like in the past. The government is ready to give as much funds as required, Rao assured and asked professors and research students to tour extensively in the state for studies without limiting themselves just to lands in varsity premises.

Further, Rao directed officials to go for recruitment for Agronomists and Agriculture Extension Officers. Also farmers should be made aware of latest mechanised technologies in the sector for better productivity. Apart from using traditional methods, new changes should be welcomed in view of increased demand in the market.

Rao lamented about the fact that 90 percent of vegetables in Hyderabad are bought from other places and states. Telangana should reach to a stage where it can export vegetables one day without the need for importing at all.Besides focusing on increasing produce, steps should be taken for good marketing.

Markfed (Marketing Federation) should be utilised better, Rao said.TRS government is committed to revive the agriculture sector and it make it a profitable venture at the earliest, he said.
