Last rites of alleged police torture victim held
The body of Banappa, 35, a contract employee of the electricity Department, who died on Monday after being allegedly tortured in Marredpally police Station lock-up on Sunday, was buried at Marredpally burial ground amid tight security on Tuesday evening.

Hyderabad: The body of Banappa, 35, a contract employee of the electricity Department, who died on Monday after being allegedly tortured in Marredpally police Station lock-up on Sunday, was buried at Marredpally burial ground amid tight security on Tuesday evening.
Marredpally police station, the scene of arson, was turned into a fortress with deployment of additional police forces and Rapid Action Force. A mob, enraged by the death of Banappa, raided the police station on Monday night, set fire to furniture and police vehicles. The riotous crowd went on the rampage and even wounded five policemen, including two sub-inspectors of police.
The family members at Gandhinagar basthi in West Marredpally received the body from the Gandhi Hospital around 11 am and performed last rites at 4 pm. Banappa is survived by his wife, Narsamma, 28, and two children, Shiva Kumar, 9, and Sujata, 6.Tension built up as the body was received by the family members. The local people demanded that the government intervene to do justice to Banappa’s family members.
T Padma Rao, Minister for Prohibition and Excise, who visited the spot, consoled the family members. He promised to bring to the notice of the government the demand that a government job be given to one of the members of Banappa’s family and more compensation be paid. He handed over a cheque for Rs 1.5 lakh from his personal funds to the family of Banappa.
Sada Kesava Reddy, vice president of the SCB, Ravi, CPI president, G Sayanna, MLA Cantonment, consoled the bereaved family members and promised to extend financial support to them. Meanwhile, DCP(North) N Prakash Reddy said that Banappa was arrested for attacking a Home Guard during the Bonalu procession.
“He was taken into custody on Sunday night following the complaint of the Home Guard. He was let off on Monday morning after securing bail. He must have been suffering from some disease,” the DCP said. However, the family members alleged that Banappa was tortured brutally in police custody. Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy said that an investigation was been ordered into the matter.
