Cable operators urge TRAI to restore Hathway services
Cable TV operators in Telangana are miffed that the ongoing tussle between Hathway and Multi Screen Media (MSM) is eating into their profits. The Telangana State Cable TV Operators Welfare Association has now sent in a written request to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to take necessary action to ensure that Hathway restores the Sony channels package.
Cable TV operators in Telangana are miffed that the ongoing tussle between Hathway and Multi Screen Media (MSM) is eating into their profits. The Telangana State Cable TV Operators Welfare Association has now sent in a written request to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to take necessary action to ensure that Hathway restores the Sony channels package.
“The tussle over distribution deals between MSM and Multi-System Operator (MSO) Hathway has only intensified, leaving thousands of families across Telangana without cable connections. More than one million customers have been affected by this switch off and approximately 20,000 customers have moved to competition,” stated a release by the cable operators.
The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) had recently asked Hathway Cable and Datacom to pay the pending dues towards subscription fees due to MSM Media Distribution. According to industry sources, Hathway did not pay their broadcasters their dues for the last seven months which amounts to a little over Rs 14 crore.
"They have to pay MSM at least Rs 14 crore right now but the actual amount is more than that. But despite taking regular money from the viewers, Hathway is refusing to pay back. On the contrary they actually blocked all the Sony channels from their cable services not only in the State but all over India," pointed a cable operator from the association.
"We are facing the brunt of this fight. Angry customers are lining up in front of our office and blaming us for channels blackout. We hope that this feud is sorted out quickly and we can go back to broadcasting Sony channels," said Shahid Ansari, a cable operator in the city.
