Strike to impact normal life
The all-India general strike called by several trade unions is likely to hit normal life especially economic activity in Telangana. The major impact of the strike on public at large would be due to RTC and auto unions joining the strike. Normally, autos ply during the RTC strike making a killing. But, this time auto unions also decided to join the strike.

Hyderabad: The all-India general strike called by several trade unions is likely to hit normal life especially economic activity in Telangana. The major impact of the strike on public at large would be due to RTC and auto unions joining the strike. Normally, autos ply during the RTC strike making a killing. But, this time auto unions also decided to join the strike.
However, there will not be any impact on operations in the Railways as the unions in this sector decided to confine to protests at administrative offices. The electricity sector is also unlikely to be affected. There will not be any disruption in power supply, sources told The Hans India. But, employees in the power sector will be holding protest meetings in solidarity with the striking workers.
The banking operations are likely to be partially affected as the sponsoring unions have formidable strength especially in the public sector banks. But, the National Confederation of Bank Employees, which has predominant presence in the State Bank of India, has not given the strike call.
The United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of the bank trade unions, has not given the strike call contrary to the earlier practice. But, individual unions have given the strike call. The strike call is likely to receive total response in the insurance sector, claims K Venugopal, Vice-President of the All-India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA).
The customers of BSNL telephone services are expected to face disruption in services as the unions in it are participating in the strike mainly demanding level-playing ground with the private operators. The main economic impact of the strike in Telangana would be felt as the production in the Singareni Collieries is likely to be affected as miners join the strike.
The recognised trade union (affiliated to the TRS-backed trade union) has given the strike call. About 80,000 workers in Singareni mines are likely to strike work. Singareni workers are opposing the Central government’s move to do away with joint bipartite mechanism in the coal sector. They are negotiating for 40 percent pension.
The Centre’s move would adversely hit them. About 20,000 contract workers in Singareni coal mines are demanding the implementation of wage hike and bonus agreements. The RTC unions are opposing the Road Safety Bill proposed by the Central government.
There are about 54 industrial clusters in and around Hyderabad having more than 3000 units employing about eight lakh workers. M Sai Babu, general secretary of the CITU, claims that these workers would also join the strike. However, the state government employees are not joining the strike. The state government offices will function normally.
The employees will confine only to lunch-hour demonstrations to express their solidarity with the striking workers. The employees in the State-level public undertakings who are under the influence of NGO unions may stay away from the strike. But, the Central government employees and workers including the defence sector employees are joining the strike, according to general secretary of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers V Nageshwar Rao.
He told The Hans India that the defence employees are opposing the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the sector among other demands. The Central government employees are mainly opposing the recent extension given to the Seventh Pay Commission. Almost all the Central government offices are to be affected by the strike.
The work in several Central Public Sector undertakings will be severely affected due to the strong presence of Central trade unions sponsoring the strike. Barring the BMS, affiliated to the BJP, major trade unions are backing the strike including the union affiliated to the ruling TRS.
The BMS was part of the strike effort till a few days ago. But they later withdrew owing to the all-India committee’s decision. Thus, workers affiliated to the BMS are expected to join the strike at many places voluntarily.
