Dengue virus turns virulent
The virulent strains of dengue virus are the main reason for increasing number of dengue cases across the Telangana State. Out of a total 1,267 dengue cases, 1,224 cases were reported between July and September.

Hyderabad: The virulent strains of dengue virus are the main reason for increasing number of dengue cases across the Telangana State. Out of a total 1,267 dengue cases, 1,224 cases were reported between July and September.
According to officials, as many as 448 dengue cases were reported since January till September last year. During this year up to September as many as 1,267 cases reported. So far, there were two deaths.
Khammam, Warangal and Karimnagar districts were the worst affected with as many as 694 cases being reported since January.According to Dr S Prabhavathi,
Additional Director of Health Department, the dengue virus has four different strains with varying degree of severity. “The four serotypes of dengue virus Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4. Each serotype has a different bearing on transmission and fatality of the disease.
An analysis of data reveals that the virus transmits at a faster pace and becomes virulent when multiple serotypes are in circulation. This is exactly how the dengue virus has led to more people being infected. And also the dengue virus might have undergone mutation this year,” she added.
However, dengue is a vector borne disease which makes it less of a disease management issue and more about environmental management. Further, urbanisation throughout the country is bound to increase the incidence of disease unless waste management and drain management are undertaken, said medical experts.
There is no specific medicine to cure dengue. “Antibiotics do not work and other medicines are not prescribed because they bring down the platelet count and may increase bleeding.
To bring down the high fever, paracetamol is given to patients. Drinking plenty of fluids, eating nutritious food, taking rest properly and stay in consultation with a physician is advisable,” said Dr Challagali Prabhu Kumar, Epidemic Specialist, at Care Hospital.
