New Delhi: Mercedes Benz India, announced at the start of the year that it was going to offer 15 products in 2015. With the year coming to an end, the company showcased their 14th product, the top of the line AMG GT S.

The car, a more powerful version of the AMG GT, was launched at a price of Rs 2.40 crores (ex-showroom Delhi). The car will be replacing the SLS AMG. Unlike the SLS, this one will not come with the Gullwing doors, which some people liked, while others felt was over the top.

The AMG GT S will take on cars like the Audi R8, Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911 among other cars in the performance category.

"Mercedes AMG has an unmatched product presence in the performance segment in India with as many as 10 unique AMG products," said Roalnd Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes Benz India, speaking at the launch.

Talking about the future of Mercedes in India, he talked about additional opportunities in II and III-tier markets for 2016 and beyond. Though he refused to talk about what products one can expect from Mercedes in the coming year.

"Achieving volumes in lower price segment and bringing down the average consumer age in India is the target. Compared to 10 years back, people are seeing Mercedes in a different light with the Maybach and AMG," he added.

Talking about sales he commented Mercedes has seen a 70 percent growth from 2014 to 2015 in the SUV segment even as 60 percent of the sales of Mercedes come from its traditional Sedans. The launch of the GLA, CLA and A class seem to have changed the perspective of Mercedes in the minds of the consumers.

Coming back to the AMG GT S, the car will be powered by a four litre V8 twin-turbo engine that is mated to a seven speed dual-clutch Gertarg transmission. This will put out a monstrous 503 bhp and 600 Nm. This car will be able to touch 100 km/hr in just 3.7 seconds from standstill and will achieve an electronically limited top speed of 310 km/hr.
